I recently came across this song on Pandora. After a closer look at the lyrics, I realized that, like pretty much any song, it could apply to my relationship with God.  Let me give you a little background.

Back in high school, my youth leaders gave everyone in our leadership team a book called Secrets of the Secret Place by Bob Sorge.  This act of love on their part and my time in this book were really my gateway into reading The Word daily, and hearing God’s voice from something that previously seemed more like just a book.  It opened my mind to this thing called the “secret place” – a concept that is actually brought up a lot in the Bible that has escaped my attention.  Before I really knew Jesus as a person, I knew Him mainly from a collective standpoint – someone “we” worshipped instead of someone “I” worshipped.  But “the secret place” is really a concept that reminds me of any intimate human relationship.  When you really love someone and want to know them, you go somewhere that no one else can go but the both of you – a deeper level of intimacy than your other relationships.  You talk to that person alone, share your darkest secrets, your biggest aspirations, your most honest desires.  And it somehow brings your heart closer to that person.  That is what my time with God is like to me.

This semester, my discipleship team is going to get the opportunity to go through Secrets of the Secret Place.  Please pray that we would all be able to establish a more intimate relationship with God.  May our devotional times be more than just “reading the Bible,” but rather looking through the Bible, as if through a window, in order to get a glimpse at the person of God, who wants to see us, to hear us, to hear from us, and to dwell in our hearts.  And our hearts are His temple – the place that only He knows – if only we let Him in.

Somewhere Only We Know – Keane

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I’ve been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go
Somewhere only we know?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go
Somewhere only we know?

This could be the end of everything
So why don’t we go
Somewhere only we know?
