Part I: Chick-fil-A

In the midst of the recent Chick-fil-A controversy, in which CEO Dan Cathy came out about his beliefs about marriage, individuals on both sides of the gay marriage debate have reacted with emotions ranging from enmity and pride all the way to anger to deep pain.  (Just to avoid misinformation, I’ve included his original interview with the Baptist Press here.)

According to Republican hub Fox News, August 1st (today) has been christened “Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day” as traditional marriage supporters show off their pride and “Eat Mor Chikin” than they ever have in their lives.  Supporters of same-sex marriage plan their own raid this Friday with “National Same-Sex Kiss Day.”

My reaction?  Well… it’s complicated.

First, I am enthralled to see so many American people acting out on their beliefs.  I’m hoping everyone who’s going to Chick-Fil-A this week (and even everyone who isn’t) is gonna vote.  The beauty of democracy is that we’re not just free to talk, but also to act.

“If you’re only in favor of freedom of expression for people you agree with, you’re not doing it right.”  ~Mark Steyn

Second, I am cautious to recall the American virtues for which we must stand: Life, liberty, property, safety, equity, justice, and happiness.  These are all loaded words that I have neither the time nor the authority to define.  I desire these things for everybody, even those whom I consider my enemy.  Not to do so would be dehumanization, which has been championed by many a European despot.

Third, I am aware that the issues at hand run deeper than politics, sandwiches, and public displays of affection.  To misquote the feminists, “The political is personal.”

Let’s Be Human

The average human has two hands, a brain, and a heart.  Most of us were born that way.  But from what I’ve seen lately, we don’t all choose to act upon this biological endowment.

If this “debate” is going to get anywhere, then before we simply react according to our nature, we have to use our heads.  And not only that, but understand where everyone’s hearts are coming from, including our own — pains, prejudices, and all.  And upon thinking and feeling, if there is any sincerity in our hearts and minds, we must act.

Can we just be human for a minute?  I don’t care as much about where our country is headed as I care about you and me and him and her, and where our lives are headed.  I want you to have the most accurate perspective on life so you can live it to the full.

Stay tuned for Part II if you will.
