So… I haven’t really been watching the Winter Olympics. But here are my thoughts based on what I’ve gathered )which is very little, by the way).

  1. I appreciate Russian art and literature, but the state of the government is pretty sad. Including the laws about cameras on your car. Though, I admit, as funny as it is convenient.
  2. The olympics are historically a chance to come together as a planet and bring our best athletes to the table. But with social media, less people are watching and more people are generally making fun of the whole deal. Nobody I know is really too excited that our country is competing.
  3. And finally, while we’re all spectating, a few select people are devoting their entire lives to a few measly seconds of their athletic career. I can’t imagine how they would feel if they messed up. The most famous ones are only famous because they were scandalized, which is so sad. I have to wonder the reasons why people are competing, and I’d imagine they vary depending on cultural values and personal character.
  4. And finally again, since these olympians are devoting their whole lives to this, it makes me think about where my devotion goes. Does what I’m doing matter? Not just in the grand scheme, but in my habitual daily routine? Am I making it matter? What makes a life “matter” anyway, any more than any other life? Paul says in Galatians 6:6-7, “You reap what you sow.” Athletes sow excellence into their every meal, every moment of their regimen, even down to their thoughts about what they’re capable of. I’ve been quite — how you say — half-assed in my commitment to my priorities lately. I’m sick of that. Lord, help me be intentional in everything I sow. I want a garden full of delicious bass, not some mutt-field full of weeds and the occasional tomato.

Those are all four of my thoughts.

What are yours?
